TRAININGS

Without a true shift in power relations, transformation in spaces provided, and the design of the participatory mechanism, we will not reach active and meaningful participation. That is why we at New Women Connectors are proposing tailor made training for organizations to undergo a transformative power shift, and for the “user, clients, beneficiaries, receiver” to turn into co-creating partners in all stages of the decision-making cycle.

Our training approach

All our training packages are tailor-made, based on your needs as an institution, organization or individual, and built on our three pillars: meaningful participation, leading resilience and feminist leadership.

Our training and projects are always based on challenging patriarchal norms, dismantling gender-based inequalities, and amplifying the voices of marginalized individuals. We constantly involve people with lived experiences, and approach every opportunity with the determination that we, marginalized communities, are not passive victims, but strong, resilient and resourceful people, who hold unique knowledge because of who we are and what we have experienced.

We work towards an infinite and continuous sharing of power to policy making in the EU, which promotes the active participation of refugee, migrant and stateless people, in particular women and non-binary people. We are dedicated to equitable policy formulation that considers the unique experiences and perspectives of marginalized groups.

HOW WE BUILD OUR TRAININGS

Are you:

an International Organization involved in advocacy for migrants, refugees, asylum seekers, and undocumented or stateless people?

Our training package would provide you with much-needed skills and understanding on how to collaborate and engage with other stakeholders in the field of integration, migration, feminist leadership, advocacy and policy making.

Our training package is based on a System Change approach where we listen, engage, discover, and adapt using innovative concepts that help you impact the rigid systems in which you operate. It includes:

Assessment: Together, we explore where you are in terms of participatory mechanisms
Introducing Concepts: We introduce you to innovative concepts concerning meaningful participation,leading resilience and feminist leadership, and teach you about different levels of participation and their applicability
Personalization: Together, we understand if the participatory mechanisms are sufficient, and what you can do for better results
Evaluation: We determine desired and undesired outcomes, as well as expected and unexpected impacts

We provide trainings to three different target groups:

Institutions: policy makers on local, regional, or European level working on migration governance, inclusion and feminist leadership
Non-governmental-organizations: involved in advocacy for migrants, refugees, asylum seekers, and undocumented or stateless people, on local, regional or european level.
Community leaders: a person with lived experience of migration, interested in developing their skills related to advocacy and policy making

We at New Women Connectors have extensive expertise in the field of migration, inclusion, meaningful participation and feminist leadership. We always co-create our trainings in order to adapt them to your needs Here are examples of trainings that we have given to policy makers on local, regional or European level:

Mile

MILE - which stands for Migrant Integration through Locally designed Experiences - is a project that aims to empower the entire local community, including newcomers, migrants, and refugees. The fundamental principle behind the project is that policy-making, particularly at the local level, should be a collaborative process that encompasses the diverse population and provides every citizen with a voice.

Within the project, New Women Connectors is responsible for the training component, which adopts a meaningful participation approach. The training's primary objective is to foster a deeper understanding among participants and to explore approaches that place citizens at the core of a city's services and local policy-making. During the design phase of the training, NWC collaborated closely with members of migrant communities and municipalities to create a platform for dialogue and mutual understanding. The training sessions cater to both migrant communities and municipalities, including local service designers, advisors, and colleagues from the municipality's outreach department, each offering their unique perspectives.

Unites

Led by Eurocities, UNITES (UrbaN InTEgration Strategies through co-design) trains and accompanies local authorities to co-design integration strategies with other stakeholders and migrants.

New Women Connectors holds an advisory role in the first phase of the project, in which training on co-designing integration strategies, incorporating research on best practices across Europe, was designed. A pilot version of the training was conducted with staff from the 8 cities participating in the project. The training is then to be developed into an open access online course (MOOC) for integration practitioners outside the project. New Women Connectors also holds an advisory role in the peer support programme, during which the 8 city partners receive guidance from colleagues from other cities and migrant organizations in peer workshops and peer-visits to each city.

MInosia labyrinth

Minosia Labyrinth is an interactive and educational role play- and simulation game (EduLARP) about migration in Europe. It aims to raise awareness on the complexities of the migration process and the difficulties migrants and refugees face in Europe.

New Women Connectors holds the role of organizer and facilitator of the training method, which is set to last between one and 4 days, depending on the complexity level, group size and needs. Indeed, before and after the role play game, the group engages in various activities to enhance reflections and discussions on themes such as inclusion and exclusion, discrimination, prejudice, (institutional) racism, privileges, human rights and colonialism. The role play game is the main and most important activity of the training.

The game has been specially developed for people in a privileged position, but we have very positive experiences with mixed groups including people with lived migration experiences who found the game an empowering experience and powerful dialogue starter. We encourage organizations working with and for the migrant and refugee community, who have a profound interest in getting in a deeper and meaningful conversation on the migration experience, to get in touch with us!

innovation lab

In 2022, different entities of the UN co-convened the Innovation Lab, in order to bring together 15 UN entities and discuss the aim and content of the UN Common pledge 2.0. During the conference, New Women Connectors held an advisory role, and gave a training on the concept of meaningful participation and how to include it in the pledge.

InterGovernamental consultations on migration, asylum and refugees

New Women Connectors was present at the 2022 decision making forum for intergovernmental information exchange and policy debate on issues of relevance to the management of international migratory flows. This informal forum brings together 19 Participating States, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, the International Organization for Migration and the European Union. During the 2022 edition, New Women Connectors held a training on meaningful participation and how to implement it.

inclusion in cities: empowering migrants through social and political engagement

NWC led an enlightening training session during an online conference focused on enhancing migrant participation in urban settings. With cities across the globe, where the inclusion of migrants in political, democratic, and social spheres has become crucial for nurturing social cohesion and representative democracy at the local level.

MInosia labyrinth

international rescue committee

New Women Connector has given theory-driven training to the IRC on meaningful participation. During the training, space was created for employees of the IRC to share how engagement was occurring across their teams, and pinpoint what needed to be improved. The training mixed theoretical framework and concrete examples, and was described by the organization as “Very helpful, impactful, challenging, theory-driven, enlightening and practical”

for community leaders

At New Women Connectors, we provide training on public speaking, advocacy, storytelling, anti-racism, and more! We always have a project with local communities going on, and we are often looking for participants that are passionate about these topics, to provide them with more tools to fight for what they believe in. Here are examples of previous or ongoing training projects with community leaders:

owning my story

Owning my Sotry is a project in which 16 people from migrant and refugee communities in Europe come together to reframe the narrative on migration and reclaim the ownership of their stories. They receive training on storytelling as a tool for advocacy, in order to finally perform on stage in Brussels. The stories are then recorded and used for an online campaign in the run-up to the European elections in 2024.

advoc-act

ADVOC-ACT is a project with a series of both online and in person trainings where migrant and refugee activists from across Europe came together to enhance their advocacy and leadership skills. The project was closed with an exposure visit to different stakeholders in the policy and advocacy realm of Brussels

real

REAL - Refugee Exchange Advocacy and Leadership - aims to virtually bring together refugees, asylum seekers and stateless advocates across the European region, to exchange knowledge and experiences, and work on enhancing self advocacy and leadership skills.

our diaries - the untold stories of migrants and refugees

During the 2023 Make Racism History Festival, we created a space in which refugees and migrants reclaimed the authorship of their stories, to tell their stories through their own voices and by their own means. Snippets of the storytellers were then used for a campaign calling for vote during the 2023 Dutch elections.
