Marie-jose van schaaik (Chairperson)
Marie-José van Schaik has an MA in Cultural Anthropology and specialised on the topic of migration. She did research on migration in Malta, Istanbul and Greece and focused especially on migrants’ fight for autonomy within the restrictions of the European border politics and the ethics of her own (non-migrant and researcher) position in the field. She works as trainer, teacher and project coordinator on several migration and inclusion related projects. She has worked on and developed several international training courses in political education on the topics of migration, inclusion, anti-racism and postcolonial perspectives. She also works for different NGOs in the Netherlands with migrant and refugee children. Currently she is involved as initiator and project coordinator of the international project “In the Footsteps of a Migrant” to develop a non-fomal educational method that aims to bring awareness in society about the complexity of the migration process and the problems and barriers migrants and refugees face in European societies (www.migrationfootsteps.net). Through experiental and empowered learning she hopes to introduce a new approach of educative activism. Both in her professional and personal life she became acquainted with the exclusionary practices of the European border regime and has since then committed herself in using her own privileged position to fight for a more inclusive and solidary society.
